Power Yoga & Yoga for Weight Loss in Mansarovar
Continuous flows, strength work and honest expectations. This batch will make you fitter and stronger. What it will not do is drop ten kilos in a month, and nobody here will pretend otherwise.
What is power yoga, and how is it different?
Power yoga takes the postures you already know from hatha and removes the pauses between them. You move from one to the next on the breath, so the heart rate climbs and stays up for most of the hour. It is a strength and stamina class built out of yoga, not a gentler version of one.
At Karma Yoga the power batch runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:15 AM in Agarwal Farm, Mansarovar. It is deliberately three days a week rather than six — the other days are for hatha or pranayama, because muscles that are worked hard on Monday need Tuesday to be different.
Who is this power yoga class for?
People who already know the basic postures and want to work hard. If you have never practised yoga, start in hatha for a few weeks — not as a gatekeeping ritual, but because moving fast through postures you have not learned is how wrists and lower backs get hurt.
This class suits you if
- You want to sweat, and a slow class leaves you restless
- You are managing your weight and want something you can sustain for years
- Your knees dislike running but you still want cardio-style effort
- You have practised hatha or another style for at least a few weeks
- You want strength work without a gym membership or a machine queue
Wait, or choose differently, if
- You are completely new — start with hatha yoga and move across in a month
- You are pregnant or recently delivered — see prenatal and postnatal yoga
- You have uncontrolled blood pressure, a recent surgery, or an acute injury — talk to your doctor first
- You want a women-only room — ask about power-style work inside the ladies-only batch
What does a typical power yoga session look like?
Sixty minutes with almost no standing around. The first ten are non-negotiable warm-up, because cold shoulders and cold hamstrings are where injuries come from.
| Minutes | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0–10 | Joint mobility and slow Surya Namaskar to raise body temperature |
| 10–30 | Fast Surya Namaskar rounds and standing flows — warrior sequences, chair, lunges, linked on the breath |
| 30–45 | Core and strength block: plank variations, boat pose, chaturanga work, glute and back strengthening |
| 45–53 | Cool-down stretches for hamstrings, hips and shoulders — the part people skip and then regret |
| 53–60 | Pranayama and shavasana to bring the heart rate down before you leave |
How long does yoga for weight loss actually take?
Longer than the internet tells you. Attending power yoga four to five times a week while changing nothing else usually shows very little on the scale in the first month, and a slow, steady change from the second or third month. Anyone promising faster than that is selling something.
What students notice first is not weight. It is that clothes fit differently, that stairs stop being an event, and that they are less hungry at 11 PM. Those come before the number moves, and they are the reason people stay.
| Timeframe | What usually changes |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Soreness, better sleep, and the discovery of muscles you had forgotten about. Scale: no change. |
| Weeks 3–6 | Stamina improves noticeably — you finish the flow without stopping. Some students see 1–2 kg, many see none. |
| Months 2–3 | Waist and clothing fit change before the scale does. Appetite and evening snacking usually settle. |
| Months 4–6 | Steady, gradual change if eating habits have also shifted. Without a change in diet, progress plateaus — this is normal, not failure. |
Yoga supports weight management; it does not do it on its own. Ritika is a yoga instructor, not a dietitian, and will not give you a diet chart she is not qualified to write. If you are working with a doctor or dietitian, she will happily plan your practice around what they have advised. For the longer explanation, read yoga for weight loss.
What students notice
Benefits of a regular power yoga practice
Reported by students over months of steady attendance. Yoga supports general fitness and is complementary to medical care — it does not replace your doctor's advice.
Stamina that shows up elsewhere
Three flights of stairs stop registering. This is usually the first change students mention, around week four.
Strength without equipment
Plank, chaturanga and warrior work build shoulders, core and legs using your own body weight.
Kinder to knees than running
No repetitive impact. For students who gave up jogging because of their knees, this is often the deciding factor.
Supports weight management
Regular practice, better sleep and steadier appetite together support gradual, sustainable change.
Mobility along with strength
Unlike most strength training, you finish the hour more flexible than you started it.
A clear head by 8:30 AM
The morning slot exists so the hard part of your day is over before work begins.

Questions
Power yoga & weight loss FAQs
How much weight can I realistically lose with power yoga?
Students who attend four to five power yoga sessions a week and change nothing about their eating typically see very little on the scale in month one, and a slow, steady change from month two or three onwards. Yoga alone is not a fast route to weight loss. It works because it is a routine you can keep for years, and because it changes appetite and sleep, which change what you eat.
Is power yoga better than the gym for weight loss?
Not better, different. A treadmill burns more in an hour. Power yoga builds strength, mobility and breath control at the same time, is easier on the knees than running, and most people stick with it longer. The best exercise for weight management is the one you actually attend six days a week.
Can a beginner join the power yoga batch?
You can, but Ritika will usually suggest two to four weeks in the hatha batch first. Power yoga moves continuously, and moving fast through postures you have not learned properly is how people hurt their wrists, shoulders and lower back.
What are the power yoga class timings in Mansarovar?
Power yoga runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:15 to 8:15 AM at the Agarwal Farm studio in Mansarovar. On the other days most power yoga students attend the 6:00 AM or 5:00 PM hatha batch, which keeps the practice daily without overloading the same muscles. See the full weekly schedule.
Do you give a diet plan with the class?
No. Ritika is a yoga instructor, not a dietitian, and will not hand you a chart she is not qualified to write. She will talk to you about meal timing around class and about the yogic habits that help, and will happily work alongside a dietitian or doctor you are already seeing.
I have knee or back trouble. Is power yoga safe for me?
Ask your doctor first, and tell Ritika before class. Depending on what she hears, she may modify the jumping transitions and deep lunges, or suggest you build up in the hatha batch instead. Yoga is complementary to medical care and does not replace it. See also yoga for knee pain.
