Yoga for Stress, Anxiety & Sleep in Jaipur
The quietest part of the syllabus — Yoga Nidra, extended-exhale breathing and Bhramari — and an honest note about when a class is not the right help.
Better sleep is the single most common thing students report after a few weeks of practice — more often than flexibility, more often than weight. Slow movement, breathing with a longer exhale, and Yoga Nidra may help you wind down an over-revved day. What this page will not do is call yoga a substitute for proper mental health care, because for a great many people it is not.
Can yoga help with stress, anxiety and sleep?
Many students find that it may help, and this is the area where the everyday experience of teaching and the published research point in the same direction most clearly. Slow movement, longer exhales and guided relaxation shift the body out of a high-alert state, and doing that reliably at the same time each evening tends to make falling asleep easier.
The likely mechanisms are not mysterious. A long exhale slows the heart rate. Attention held on the body interrupts the loop of planning and rehearsing that keeps people awake. An hour of physical effort discharges some of the restlessness that a desk job leaves in the system. And a fixed evening routine is, on its own, one of the better-supported things anyone can do for sleep.
What yoga is not is a substitute for assessment when something more than everyday tension is going on. That distinction matters enough to have its own section.
When should I speak to a professional instead?
Everyday stress and a few restless nights are one thing. A persistent change in mood, sleep or functioning is another, and it deserves proper care rather than a breathing technique. Please speak to a doctor, a qualified counsellor or a psychiatrist if any of this sounds like you.
- Low mood, hopelessness or loss of interest lasting more than two weeks
- Worry you cannot switch off that is affecting work, study or relationships
- Panic attacks — sudden intense fear with a racing heart, breathlessness or shaking
- Insomnia most nights for a month or more, or waking very early every day
- Using alcohol, sleeping tablets or other substances to get through the evening
- Any thought of harming yourself — please seek help today, from a doctor, a hospital, or a recognised mental health helpline
None of that stops you coming to class. Yoga sits alongside counselling and medication very comfortably. If you are on medication for anxiety, depression or sleep, keep taking it exactly as prescribed and let your doctor be the one who changes anything.
What is Yoga Nidra, exactly?
It is a guided practice done lying down and fully supported — bolster under the knees, blanket over you, eyes closed — in which the teacher moves your attention systematically around the body and the breath while you stay completely still. It usually runs fifteen to thirty minutes.
Nothing is asked of you except to lie there and listen, which is why students who find seated meditation impossible take to it immediately. Falling asleep during it is common and nobody minds. Students most often describe the effect as coming out feeling as though they had rested far longer than the clock says, and it is the practice they ask to take home first.
Which practices are used, and what does each one do?
The evening sequence is deliberately undemanding. Nothing here requires strength or flexibility, and every one of these can be done at home on a bed.
| Practice | What it does | How long | Cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balasana बालासन Child's pose |
A forward, closed shape that most people find immediately settling. Usually the first thing in an evening class. | 1–3 minutes | Knees wide, bolster under the chest. Skip if the knees do not fold. |
| Supported Uttanasana उत्तानासन Standing forward fold |
Head below the heart with the forearms resting on a chair — releases the neck and shoulders after a working day. | 1–2 minutes | Knees bent. Come up slowly. Skip with uncontrolled high blood pressure or dizziness. |
| Supta Baddha Konasana सुप्त बद्ध कोणासन Reclining bound angle |
Opens the chest and belly over a bolster with no effort required. The classic restorative posture. | 3–5 minutes | Support under both thighs so nothing hangs. |
| Viparita Karani विपरीत करणी Legs up the wall |
Reduces the heavy-legs feeling after a day of standing or sitting and is strongly associated with settling down. | 5–10 minutes | Skip with uncontrolled high blood pressure or glaucoma. |
| Setu Bandhasana (supported) सेतु बंधासन Bridge over a block |
A mild chest opener held passively, which counters the collapsed posture of a long day. | 2–4 minutes | Block on its lowest height under the pelvis, not the lower back. |
| Extended-exhale breathing दीर्घ श्वास Roughly 1:2 breathing |
Exhale about twice as long as the inhale — four in, six to eight out. The most portable practice in the class; usable in a meeting or in traffic. | 5–10 minutes | Never strain. If you feel breathless, return to normal breathing. |
| Nadi Shodhana नाड़ी शोधन / अनुलोम विलोम Alternate-nostril breathing |
Slow, even, balanced breathing. Taught without any breath retention. | 5–10 minutes | Stop if light-headed. No retention for anyone with anxiety or panic. |
| Bhramari भ्रामरी प्राणायाम Humming breath |
A long humming exhale with the ears gently closed. The practice most students take home and use in bed. | 6–10 rounds | Avoid with an active ear infection. Otherwise very safe. |
| Sheetali / Sheetkari शीतली / शीतकारी Cooling breath |
A cooling practice used in the Jaipur summer and by students who describe themselves as running hot and irritable. | 5–8 rounds | Not in a cold season with a cough, cold or asthma. |
| Yoga Nidra योग निद्रा Guided deep relaxation |
The centrepiece. Guided attention around the body while lying supported and still. | 15–30 minutes | Warm covering, because body temperature drops. Falling asleep is fine. |
| Shavasana शवासन Corpse pose |
Closes every class, and is the reason many students say they miss class when they skip it. | 5–10 minutes | Bolster under the knees. Never skipped. |
What should I avoid?
Most of the cautions here are about doing the wrong practice at the wrong hour, and about one specific technique that is genuinely unhelpful for people prone to panic.
- Breath retention (kumbhaka) if you are prone to anxiety or panic. Holding the breath can reproduce the exact sensations of a panic attack. It is not taught to students who tell us they experience panic.
- Kapalbhati and Bhastrika in the evening. These are stimulating morning practices. They are also avoided in pregnancy, high blood pressure, hernia and ulcers.
- Vigorous power yoga late at night, which leaves many people wired rather than tired.
- Forcing meditation. Fighting your own thoughts creates more tension than it removes. Guided practice is easier and works better for beginners.
- Using yoga to postpone getting help for persistent anxiety, low mood or insomnia.
- Stopping prescribed medication for anxiety, depression or sleep because a class felt good. Any change is your doctor's decision.
- Practising with the phone next to you. The screen undoes the wind-down faster than the practice builds it.
Legs up the wall for five minutes. Then sit on the bed and breathe in for a count of four and out for a count of six or eight, for twenty rounds. Then six rounds of Bhramari. Lights low, phone in another room. It is not dramatic and it does not need to be — doing it at the same time every night is what makes it work.
How do the evening sessions work here?
The meditation and pranayama sessions run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 PM and are built entirely around this material. The 5:00 PM hatha batch also ends with pranayama and a long Shavasana, which is enough for many students.
What an evening session looks like
- Ten minutes of slow joint movement to get out of the day
- Twenty minutes of supported restorative postures, props already set out
- Ten minutes of breathing — extended exhale, Nadi Shodhana or Bhramari
- Fifteen to twenty minutes of guided Yoga Nidra under a blanket
- Lights low, no music with words, nobody made to speak
Tell Ritika before class
- If you experience panic attacks, so breath retention is left out entirely
- If you are under the care of a doctor or counsellor, so nothing here conflicts
- If lying still with eyes closed is uncomfortable — eyes open is completely fine
- If you are pregnant, so the supported positions are set up on your side
- If you would prefer a women-only room
This page is general information about yoga practice, not medical advice, and it does not diagnose anything. Yoga is complementary to medical treatment and does not replace it. If you are experiencing persistent anxiety, low mood, panic or insomnia, please speak to a doctor, a qualified counsellor or a psychiatrist — and if you have any thought of harming yourself, seek help today from a doctor, a hospital or a recognised mental health helpline. Do not stop, reduce or change any prescribed medication because you have started yoga, and tell your teacher about your situation before class.

Questions
Yoga for stress, anxiety & sleep — FAQs
Can yoga help with stress and sleep?
Many students find that slow yoga, extended-exhale breathing and Yoga Nidra may help them wind down and fall asleep more easily. It is one of the more consistently reported benefits of a regular practice. It is a complementary practice and it is not a substitute for professional care where anxiety, low mood or insomnia are persistent.
What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a guided practice done lying down and fully supported, in which the teacher moves your attention systematically through the body and the breath while you stay still. It usually lasts fifteen to thirty minutes. Nothing is required of you except lying there, which is why it suits people who find seated meditation difficult.
Which pranayama is best before bed?
Slow breathing with a longer exhale than inhale, and Bhramari, are the two most used in the evening. Both are gentle, need no equipment and can be done sitting on your bed. Fast, stimulating practices such as Kapalbhati and Bhastrika are morning practices and are not suitable before sleep.
Is yoga a treatment for anxiety or depression?
No. Yoga is a supportive practice that may help with everyday tension and sleep. Anxiety disorders and depression are medical conditions and deserve proper assessment. If low mood, panic, persistent worry or sleeplessness is affecting your daily life, please speak to a doctor, a qualified counsellor or a psychiatrist, and continue any prescribed medication.
I cannot switch my mind off in meditation. Am I doing it wrong?
No. A busy mind is the normal starting point and not a sign of failure. Noticing that you have drifted and coming back is the practice itself, not an interruption of it. Guided practices such as Yoga Nidra and Bhramari are easier than silent meditation for most beginners.
When is the best time to practise for sleep?
The evening batch at 6:30 PM suits most working students, and a short ten-minute practice at home an hour before bed suits everyone. Avoid vigorous power yoga late at night, and keep the last hour before sleep free of screens if you can.
